Bolangir Migrant Worker Dies Amid Exploitation Claims

Bolangir: A family in Bolangir district has alleged that the death of their relative, a migrant worker, was caused by exploitation and harsh working conditions imposed by his employer outside the state.

The deceased, identified as Siba Majhi from Kuanbaunsa under Patnagarh Police limits, reportedly took up employment outside Odisha with his wife, arranged by an agent named Ashok Barik. The couple was hired against an advance payment of Rs 4,000-5,000 per head, according to the family.

Siba’s wife, Raimati Majhi, claimed that her husband endured unbearable working conditions, leading to his health deteriorating rapidly. “His body was aching, and he felt very uneasy. I took him to the hospital, but he didn’t survive. Despite informing the employer, they demanded money from us instead,” she said.

Adding to the family’s anguish, Siba’s elder brother and sister-in-law, who sought to recover the advance payment, were allegedly detained by the employer.

The incident has raised concerns about the treatment of migrant workers and accountability of employers. The district administration has yet to comment on the allegations, as the grieving family seeks justice for Siba’s death.
