Bhubaneswar Railway Station’s First Phase to Open in October 2025

Bhubaneswar: The first phase of the much-anticipated redevelopment of Bhubaneswar Railway Station is set to be inaugurated in October 2025, according to the Ministry of Railways. The project, which aims to transform the station into a world-class transport hub with airport-like amenities, is progressing rapidly on both the east and west sides.

On the east side, facing Cuttack Road, construction of a G+3 building has been fully completed. Meanwhile, on the west side, near the Master Canteen area, the first phase of a G+11 structure has been completed up to the fourth floor. Interior work is currently underway at a brisk pace.

With an estimated cost of ₹398 crore, the redevelopment project is designed to meet international standards. One of its major highlights is a 108-meter-long air concourse being constructed above the platforms, connecting both sides of the station. The roof work of the concourse has already commenced. The facility will accommodate over 1,000 passengers and will feature lounges and comfortable seating areas.

The new station will have separate entry and exit points on both sides to streamline passenger movement. Once completed, the station is expected to handle up to 1 lakh passengers daily, a significant jump from the current average of around 77,000.

Passenger convenience is a key focus, with wider foot overbridges ensuring safe and smooth movement across platforms. The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has also approved the construction of an elevated drive-in and entry-exit road on the Master Canteen side. Work on these elevated roads has already started on BDA-allotted land.

The project is being implemented in coordination with the BDA and East Coast Railway, with additional plans for commercial zones and integrated parking facilities within the station premises. Commercial development will be carried out based on consultations between the two agencies, utilizing designated land.

Among the key features of the revamped station are 34 lifts, 20 escalators, a baggage screening area, digital information kiosks, waiting lounges, a food plaza, and modern terminal infrastructure. Additional passenger amenities will include 21 rooms, 150 dormitory beds, food courts, paid lounges, children’s play areas, ATMs, stalls, airport-style display boards, and infrastructure for differently-abled individuals.

Security and sustainability have also been prioritized, with the installation of CCTV surveillance, access control systems, luggage scanners, and electric vehicle charging stations in the parking zones.

According to East Coast Railway officials, the second phase of the redevelopment will include the construction of the remaining seven floors of the west-side building, completing the vision for the new Bhubaneswar Railway Station.
