Bhubaneswar Prepares for 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas with Tight Security
Bhubaneswar: The countdown for the much-anticipated 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention has officially begun, with Bhubaneswar preparing to host the prestigious event for the first time. In preparation, a mock drill was conducted today at Janata Maidan to ensure seamless security operations.
The mock drill, led by Urban Warfare teams, focused on counter-terrorism strategies. Units from the Special Operations Group (SOG), Special Protection Group (SPG), Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), Fire Brigade, and the K9 squad actively participated in the exercise. Odisha DGP Yogesh Bahadur Khurania personally oversaw the security arrangements, joined by the Police Commissioner, Additional Police Commissioner, and other senior officials.
Security around Janata Maidan will be managed by police forces, bolstered by 80 platoons and 10 companies of security personnel. A total of 650 senior police officers will monitor the convention, ensuring the safety of delegates arriving from across the globe. The Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) will also assist in city-wide surveillance.
The heightened security comes in response to a threatening video email allegedly issued by Khalistani terrorist Pannun. In light of the threat, the city will be placed under CCTV surveillance from January 8 to 10.
Odisha Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja attended the mock drill, emphasizing the state’s commitment to providing a secure environment for the event. The Odisha government has also introduced double-decker buses to facilitate the movement of Pravasi Bharatiyas during the convention.
With stringent security protocols in place, Bhubaneswar stands ready to welcome global delegates to celebrate the rich contributions of the Indian diaspora.
