Bhubaneswar Gears Up for Net-Zero Emissions by 2070

Bhubaneswar: A high-profile workshop was held in Bhubaneswar today to discuss and draft a strategic roadmap for achieving Net-Zero emissions for the city by 2070.

The workshop, organized by the UK government in collaboration with Odisha’s Energy Department and the Grid Corporation of Odisha (GRIDCO), focused on developing sustainable solutions for the city’s energy and transport sectors.

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), serving as the knowledge partner, facilitated discussions involving government officials, academics, and industry experts. The initiative aligns with Odisha’s broader sustainability goals, with the state targeting an increase in renewable energy capacity by 10.9 gigawatts by the 2029-30 fiscal year.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Vibha Dhawan, Director General of TERI, emphasized the need for collective efforts to build a greener Odisha. “We must embrace cooperative action to navigate the journey towards sustainability,” she stated.

Commitment to Renewable Energy

GRIDCO Managing Director Trilochan Panda reaffirmed Odisha’s commitment to clean energy, highlighting the urgent need for innovative solutions and the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure powered by renewable sources.

Dr. Andrew Fleming, the British Deputy High Commissioner to East & Northeast India, shared insights from the UK’s approach to urban sustainability. He praised Odisha’s transition to renewable energy and compared it to Coventry’s green energy initiatives in the UK.

Focus on Urban Mobility and Energy Transition

Discussions at the workshop centered around critical areas, including sustainable urban mobility and energy efficiency. Experts from the UK, including Shamla Gadgil from Coventry City Council and Jacob Roberts from Cenex, provided strategies for increasing EV adoption and infrastructure development in Bhubaneswar.

Formal Agreement for Future Action

The event concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between TERI and the Odisha government, marking a crucial step in the state’s commitment to sustainable development.

The initiative positions Bhubaneswar as a leader in India’s push toward Net-Zero emissions, paving the way for a cleaner and more energy-efficient future.
