Banakalagi Ritual in Srimandir Today

Puri: The public darshan of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra at Srimandir will be restricted for four hours today for ‘Banakalagi Niti’. As per reports, the ritual will be conducted after the completion of ‘Dwitiya Bhoga Mandap Niti’ in the afternoon.

Banakalagi ritual is performed by a particular class of servitor called ‘Datta Mahapatra’. Different types of natural colours like- Hingula, Harital, Kasturi, Keshar, glue of kaintha are used to prepare the Banaka.

Being a secret ritual, the public darshan has been restricted during the Banakalagi ritual.
