Akshay Danda Breaks at Srimandir

Puri: In an unfortunate incident, the Akshay Danda, the bamboo pole that holds the Neelachakra flag atop Srimandir, broke while bearing the sacred flag. As a result, the Neelachakra flag could not be traditionally unfurled on Friday and was instead tied to the temple.

The Neelachakra flag is changed daily as part of temple rituals, a responsibility carried out by the Chunara servitors. However, the breaking of the Akshay Danda is considered an inauspicious sign, deeply upsetting devotees, who regard it as an ominous event. Many have expressed their sorrow over the incident, highlighting the spiritual significance of the daily ritual.

Authorities and temple servitors are expected to take necessary steps to restore the traditional practice as soon as possible.
