Above Normal Rainfall Likely in Odisha During 2025 Monsoon: IMD

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted above normal rainfall for many regions of Odisha during the upcoming monsoon season, bringing a positive outlook for agriculture in the state.
Addressing a press briefing in New Delhi, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the southwest monsoon, which spans from June to September, is expected to deliver more than the usual seasonal rainfall across most parts of the country. “Many areas in Odisha are likely to receive above normal rainfall this year,” he stated.
As per IMD standards, 87 cm of rainfall is considered normal for the season, and any amount exceeding 105% of that figure qualifies as above normal.
Mohapatra also noted that while most of the country will benefit from ample rain, regions such as Northeast India, Tamil Nadu, and Ladakh may experience below normal rainfall.
When asked about the El Niño phenomenon, which typically disrupts rainfall patterns, Mohapatra reassured that there is currently no sign of El Niño affecting India. “Natural atmospheric conditions are prevailing, and we do not expect El Niño to impact this monsoon season,” he said.
He further highlighted the link between snow cover and monsoon performance, explaining that reduced snow cover in Eurasia and the Northern Hemisphere—observed this year during spring—generally correlates with better monsoon activity in India.
Concluding on an optimistic note, the IMD chief said, “This year’s monsoon will likely bring cheer to farmers across the country.”
