9 New Varieties of Paddy Developed by NRRI

Cuttack: The ICAR-National Rice Research Institute (NRRI) in Odisha’s Cuttack city has developed nine new varieties of paddy in 2023. These new paddy varieties are suitable for different ecologies. The new varieties of paddy developed by the NRRI are CR 807, CR 804, CR 808, CR 211, CR 212, CR 214, CR 322, CR 329 and CR 331.

These paddy varieties require comparatively less water and can withstand adverse conditions like drought, flood and climate change. They can reduce cultivation cost by 40 to 50 per cent. NRRI has also developed a new long slender variety of paddy to cater to the rising demand for such rice among the urban population.

The central committee of the ICAR has approved the cultivation of these new paddy varieties in states like Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. According to the NRRI Director Amaresh Kumar Nayak, there will be a gazette notification regarding it soon.
