New Delhi: In a move to reduce accident injuries and deaths, two ISI certified helmets shall be given free with purchase of two wheelers said the government of India.

According to reports in a recent meeting the Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has issued instructions to two-wheeler sellers. He said  that all two-wheelers should be sold with two ISI-certified helmets without exception.

The announcement was made at the Auto Summit in New Delhi and has been strongly supported by the Two-Wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association (THMA) of India. It is worth mentioning here that, there has been a marked increase in the number of road accidents in India in the past few years.

“Statistics paint a grim picture of India’s road safety where over 4,80,000 road accidents and 1, 88,000 deaths are reported every year. Out of these 66 per cent accidents involve individuals aged between 18 and 45. Among two-wheeler fatalities, more than 69,000 deaths annually occur and 50 per cent are due to the absence of helmets, ” reported the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Holding engineers largely responsible for the rise in road accidents due to poor planning and design of roads, the Union Minister also pointed to substandard detailed project reports (DPRs). With road safety a top priority, the government aims to reduce accident rates by 50% by 2030, he added.

Gadkari further urged the industry and government to collaborate in finding solutions to prevent road accidents, emphasizing the importance of education in building safer infrastructure and promoting awareness on safer driving habits. He also highlighted the need for stronger law enforcement and responsive emergency medical services.
